11th May 2021 The Gisborne Herald Jack Malcolm
ASIA Braithwaite continued her incredible season of surfing by winning Gisborne Boardriders Club’s second Super Series event.
Braithwaite won $600 in prizes for her surfing on Sunday at Makorori, winning both the open women’s division and the title of top junior woman.
Surfing in the open final against Hannah Kohn, Holly Quinn and Abi Daunton, Braithwaite put on a display of dynamic surfing on both backhand and forehand waves to record a 10-point score in the final.
It was tightly contested, with Quinn just off the pace in second place with 8.57 and Kohn just behind her, third with 8.43.
Braithwaite didn’t surf in the final of the junior girls’ division, but her result in the open meant she was also awarded the title of top junior woman and the $100 prize that went with it.
In the open men’s final, Nick White defeated an experienced field in Jay Quinn, Finn Vette and Brent Rasby.
Vette finished second with a heat score of 12.90 behind White’s 14.08, which also secured him the top junior male title. Quinn rounded off the podium with a score of 12.73.
The entry of more than 50 competitors enjoyed excellent competition conditions, with waist-high waves and variable wind throughout the day.
